Modern women (you and me) are working harder and longer to achieve our dreams, meaning we are pushing our bodies to their extremes.
This new wave of female founders are setting up their own businesses alongside looking after families, running homes and holding down day jobs until their side hustles are making them the income they deserve.
We are a generation of wonder women our children will look up to, admire and strive to emulate. It is incredible to witness – yet often these amazing women don’t prioritise themselves enough; feeling guilty about investing time in their health and wellbeing. But you can’t pour from an empty cup. I should know; my cup was beyond empty.
My health journey started in October 2020. I was constantly feeling tired, run down and knackered. My body felt creaky, I had no energy. I was constantly snappy with my two girls. I didn’t recognise the tired face staring back at me from all those business, family and friends’ zoom calls. I am 41 and was feeling more like 51.
Running around after two kids under six, running a home and building a business had taken it out of me. That was before the extra stress of living through a pandemic. I’d also forgotten the multiple conception traumas my body had gone through in the three years before kids. I needed to stop and give my body some serious love and support.
I had watched my sister’s transformation over the last five months. She had been taking clean non toxin nutritionals and a collagen supplement. Her results were speaking for themselves. She is older than me but is now looking younger, So I trusted her and started my journey of self love and healing. Now I am getting my glow back and more!
Here’s how you can give your body the best foundation upon which to build your empire.
Thanks to the cosmetics industry we already know how great collagen is for softening our wrinkles and keeping our skin youthful; but do you know what it does for the lining of your gut and the rest of your body?
Looking after yourself on the outside starts on the inside, with your gut. It’s an essential system that plays a huge part in our overall health and well being. The gut is considered the second brain and controls so much of our everyday life; emotions, stress, sleep, moods, skin. If your gut is healthy then it goes a long way to ensuring you are happier, healthier, more energetic, hydrated and glowing.
Our gut lining is the primary barrier between the gut microbiomes and our body. Certain things we put into our bodies (like antibiotics, pain medications, alcohol, sugary processed foods) can irritate and harm our gut lining; leading to malfunction, intolerances and potential health issues such as leaky gut syndrome. (Recognisable symptoms like acne, depression, weight gain, IBS, mood disorders, and autoimmune conditions might be clues you could be affected by leaky gut. If you suspect you might be suffering please always consult your Dr).
Did you know our bodies stop producing collagen at the age of 25?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, when production slows and stops, we see ourselves start to age over time. On the outside our skin loosens, it loses plumpness and elasticity. And the same thing happens inside of us too, everything starts to lose its strength and rigidity, becoming weak and achy.
Because it is found literally everywhere in the body, it is so important to skin, hair, nail, eye (they are 90% collagen), bone, joint, cartilage, muscle, ligament and tendon strength, as well as digestive health. It is THE substance that holds the body together.
Collagen is a hard, insoluble, and fibrous protein (called a triple helix) and forms a scaffold to provide connection, strength and structure. It contains an amazing 19 different amino acids, including arginine, glutamine, glycine, leptin and proline which help keep us healthy.
Lets dig deeper…
Glutamine has been identified as the key amino acid for preventing inflammation of the gut wall and strengthening the lining by healing damaged cell walls. A healthy intestinal barrier function allows certain gut-derived molecules to get into the body, while keeping the baddies out; helping prevent or treat leaky gut. This supports better immune and brain performance.
The amino acid glycine is important in forming muscle tissue, so helps improve muscle mass, which in turn helps boost metabolism. Glycine also helps slow aging overall by supporting posture, bone health, digestion, and even the central nervous system.
Proline is an essential amino acid for heart health. It helps clear fat accumulation in the arteries, repairs tissue within the joints and arteries, and helps control blood pressure. The amino acid Arginine also helps heart health with the widening of arteries and relaxation of blood vessels for better circulation.
Collagen also aids the digestive process because it is a hydrophilic molecule, meaning it has an attraction to water and acidic molecules. Ingested collagen surrounds itself with water and stomach acid as it moves through the gut, easing the passage of food through. It can promote the release of the hormone, leptin; which tells you when you are full helping prevent overeating.
Let’s talk about lifestyle…
Lifestyle and diet play a hugely important role in your health and wellness. So making sure you look after yourself with the food you eat, the water you drink and exercise you take; will help you stay healthy and mobile. Supplements are there to support/boost a healthy lifestyle.
The body naturally makes its own collagen by breaking down dietary protein into amino acids. The amino acids are what build the various types of protein in the body, including collagen. You get the specific building blocks for collagen by eating a balanced diet of protein-rich foods (like bone broth, chicken, beef, fish, eggs whites, dairy, legumes, nuts and whole grains) and a variety of fresh produce.
This process also requires vitamin C, zinc and copper. You can get vitamin C by eating citrus fruits, berries, tropical fruits, red and green peppers, tomatoes, broccoli and leafy greens. You can get the minerals by eating meats, shellfish, nuts, whole grains, soy and beans. A diet high in fresh vegetables and fruit has the added benefit of providing antioxidants, which protect the body from oxidative stress that can degrade collagen.
However as previously mentioned, when we age the body’s ability to produce collagen naturally decreases and stops. Excess sun exposure, smoking and poor diet also inhibit collagen production. Also with age, your body may no longer absorb nutrients as well or synthesize them as efficiently. This is where supplements can help us to be healthier.
Please be aware if you are looking at different supplements it is hugely important to do your research because a lot are largely unregulated, contain fillers or contaminates and the supplement will have little to no effect.
To sum up.
I have always been relatively healthy but over the last 6 months I have really focused on my diet to ensure I really am making the best choices. I have added in natural fermented foods like kombucha, kimchi, sauerkraut and kefir. I ensure I move my body intentionally each day be it a long walk, a 30min HIIT, yoga or meditation.
I have also chosen the right supplements to compliment my lifestyle and diet. These include probiotics, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and for me the most important one is the collagen. This is a unique, multi-patented liquid Type II collagen supplement that comes from a single, contaminate-free source (the collagen is extracted in its true form from inside organic, hormone-free chicken sternal cartilage). It has proven clinical efficacy in human trials, and is backed by science in its extraction, it’s collagen/HA matrix structure, and it’s bio-optimised to the exact size in liquid form for maximum absorption. And I just LOVE it!
And because of all these better choices I now knew I could now support my body to be its best. Healthy enough to chase after my kids, strong enough to build my empire, and reduce the signs of ageing inside and out so I could feel like me again. We deserve to feel our best because as women we are constantly giving our all to others.
