Meet Farryn Watts, founder of Farryn Amber
In this interview series, our aim is to feature incredible business women who are company founders. Our goal is to share experiences and insights so we can all learn from each other, and be inspired to take action toward building the businesses of our dreams.
Hello Farryn — We’re so thrilled that you’re taking part, thank you!
Firstly, tell us a bit about you.
I am a Gold Coast gal residing in London. I love animals (wish I could rescue and help them all!), being cosy in the winter and being on the beach in the summer (who doesn’t?), mowing the lawn, disney/pixar films, chocolate, watermelon, plants, apple cider and country pubs. I hate coriander and cumin, confrontation, public speaking, my chronic hay-fever during spring (I can’t even leave the house), clutter and whisky. I am also the founder of Farryn Amber.
And tell us about your business.
Farryn Amber started off as a hobby in my little apartment kitchen in Melbourne when I was studying Interior Design. It has grown so much such then! We re-branded in March this year and for us, this is when our business properly launched. We now have a wide range of candle fragrances and a brand new skincare collection, launching in November.
What inspired you to start Farryn Amber?
Our brand has always been inspired by my home in Australia, each and every single product has a piece of my heart and is always created with a certain memory of home. The desire to start creating began during my Interior Design course, I had a stronger interest in the styling and soft furnishing side than the technical side. This is when I first started gaining an interest in creating my own home decor products. Also, for anyone that knows me, knows I am a HUGE animal lover, my entire business and ethos is based around vegan and cruelty-free products while always keeping my brand eco-friendly and sustainable for our lovely planet.
How has the founder experience been for you?
It has been a bumpy ride! Many ups and downs but as times goes on there are more ups than downs. If only I knew then what I know now!
What have you found the most challenging?
This is such a competitive market and we are all trying to find our niche. Brand awareness has been a huge struggle for me but I feel that keeping to our brands ethos and always staying true to what you believe and not straying from the path has been our key to success.
What has been your best investment?
My time has been my best investment. After our re-brand in March this year I quit my full-time job to focus more on the business. This was the scariest leap i’ve ever made but we have come so far and met so many amazing people along the way so far! I wouldn’t change it for anything!
Have you made any mistakes or faux pas? If so, can you share with us?
OMG, soooo many! I actually can’t think of anything specific but I never get too upset about them as we are always learning and developing, I’ll never know everything!
Have you had an role models or mentors along the way?
Not a role model or mentor as such but the best person I’ve had alongside me throughout my whole journey is my amazing partner, Tom. Without him this would’ve been 20 million times harder! He always supports me and helps me with really difficult decisions that I can’t make. He’s the best 🙂
What’s been your greatest lesson you’ve learnt since starting your own business?
Self-Management! This has been a real struggle for me, forcing myself not to work throughout the night during busy times or through my lunch-breaks. I’ve had to set myself strict working times and also no work on weekends, this is me time!
What does success mean to you?
Having a brand that people can connect with and love! I am always here for people with any questions they have and I think the greatest success of a business is to have that sense of intimacy and communication.
What advice would you give anyone about to start a business?
Get ready for the biggest ride of your life! Emotionally, physically and mentally. Its exhausting but also the most rewarding experience you can have.
Finally, how can readers get in touch with you?
You can get in touch with me via my instagram @FarrynAmber or pop me an email, firstname.lastname@example.org
Thank you! — Lara & Frankie
