Meet Rachael Welford, Founder of Welford Wellbeing

Firstly, tell us a bit about you.

Hi, I’m Rachael and I’m the founder of Welford Wellbeing. I’m an inspirational speaker, mental health advocate and holistic therapist specialising in energy and sound. I also work as an artist under the name LidlBillionaire.

And tell us about your business.

Welford Wellbeing was born out of an innate passion to help and empower others, especially around mental health. I want to show others what can be achieved even with a diagnosis like depression and anxiety.

I’ve since built Welford Wellbeing to be an inclusive, inspiring space of self discovery. I believe everyone deserves access to their full potential; I want to start an infectious addiction to feeling good and listening to ourselves. To feel better, then go out into the world and do better.

I offer Reiki, energy field work and sound therapy (gong baths) to help people manage stress, anxiety and their overall wellbeing. I also created a stress management system called VSMART which gives corporations tools to manage work stressors and mental health.

LidlBillionaire was a way to escape when I was really unwell, drawing really helped me get out of my head and express myself creatively as part of my healing. My work is free flowing and spontaneous. I guess this is a way to express my free spirited side as an illustrator, maker and artist.

What inspired you to start Welford Wellbeing?

I had a breakthrough after experiencing burnout and being bed ridden with mental health issues. I woke up one day in my thirties, in my childhood bedroom being cared for by my parents and thought, “there has to be more to life than this?!”

I started researching alternative health practices like Reiki, EFT, meditation and sound therapy and turned my life around. I then felt so inspired and invested in what I had learnt, that I had to share it.

How has the founder experience been for you?

If I am truthful, it’s been one of the most rewarding and fun, but toughest things I have ever done.

Keeping on top of my mental health and showing up when depression makes me want to hide has been testing but knowing I have people relying on my to get up, dress up, show up and create helps me stay well and drive my business forward.

What have you found the most challenging?

The most challenging thing for me is getting everything done. I’m doing everything by myself at the moment and bootstrapping both projects, which can be demanding.

On top of all the business work, keeping up with my mental and physical health routine, social life, dating, keeping the house clean and trying to have fun on a tight financial and time budget is where my creative mind really comes in handy 🙂

What has been your best investment?

Courses and equipment have been my biggest investments financially so far. Investing in my own self development and business knowledge as well as things like my gong and other sound therapy instruments has been expensive, but worth it.

Investing in my health is free. Activities like running, laying in a park, EFT and meditation don’t cost money but prioritising self care can be tough when there is so much to do. But that investment is the one which has paid off the most.

Have you made any mistakes or faux pas? If so, can you share with us?

Yes! Loads! It’s been a huge learning curve for me.

My advice… always read the small print and don’t just go on what people say. I would recommend trusting yourself and your vision and not letting people sway you.

Probably the biggest mistakes I have made… working for free too much (it’s hard when you love what you do, but it is a business at the end of the day and a girl’s gotta eat!), focussing on the wrong things and getting distracted from my goals, trying to do too many things at once. I have found you can do all of the things, just not all at once.

Have you had an role models or mentors along the way?

People like Louise Hay, Gabby Bernstein, Brad Yates and Danielle La Porte were early inspirations for me and I guess have been role models in a way.

I hope I can bring as much information and insight to people as they did to me when I was really suffering with my mental health.

What’s been your greatest lesson you’ve learnt since starting your own business?

Just take action! Go for it. Fear slows everything down. You have to action everything as and when it come up even if it scares you.

What does success mean to you?

To me success is being able to live life on your terms with no worries. The freedom to travel and spend time doing the important things in life like spending time with friends and family and diving into the ocean!

What advice would you give anyone about to start a business?

It may sound awful but focus on your cash flow and be savvy with how you spend your time.

I wasted loads of time at the beginning thinking and worrying about my branding and logo etc. when I could have been pitching clients and getting cash into the business. Without cash you will have to get a job so always focus there first.

Have a plan and stick to it. Getting overwhelmed and lost in everything you have to do will leave you chasing your tail. And finally, enjoy the journey!
