Meet Sara Carty, Founder of Marketbound
In this interview series, our aim is to feature incredible business women who are company founders. Our goal is to share experiences and insights so we can all learn from each other, and be inspired to take action toward building the businesses of our dreams.
Hello Sara —
We’re so thrilled that you’re taking part, thank you!
Firstly, tell us a bit about you.
I’m originally from Montreal, Canada and moved to London a little over three years ago. I came for work but have always wanted to move to London. I’ve worked in startups for most of my eight year marketing career and love every minute of it!
In the last few years in London I’ve kept busy with learning to code, learning the ins and outs of photoshop and guest lectured at the ESSCA School of Management in Budapest. I also have a 17 year old dog (I’ve had him all 17 years!) who I spend every free minute with!
And tell us about your business.
I launched Marketbound to work with startups and early stage ventures to help build strategies that make sense on a limited budget. Having worked primarily in this space, I’ve discovered there are a ton of great companies with amazing products who don’t really know where to start when it comes to marketing. Most of what I do is help founders find the best channels to connect with their communities.
What inspired you to start Marketbound?
I think entrepreneurship was initially inspired by my father, he started his business later in life almost ten years ago. I saw both the highs and lows when he was starting and it encouraged me to want to pursue that but also gave me insights into what I should expect.
How has the experience been for you?
It’s been amazing! Of course it’s not easy but I am so happy working with clients who are passionate about the solutions they are presenting to the world. It’s also such a pleasure to get to work on projects that touch on so many different industries.
What have you found the most challenging?
The most challenging part so far has been overcoming the “Imposter Syndrome” you feel when speaking to clients. I think this impacts women founders more often but it’s something that becomes much more prevalent when you’re working for yourself.
What has been your best investment?
My best investment has been has been in networking events. As a marketing professional, I understand the importance of using the right tools to promote your business but networking events are always a great way to connect your online with your offline efforts.
Have you made any mistakes or faux pas? If so, can you share with us?
Nope not one. JK! Of course, I think part of starting a business is learning to fail fast and build from it. One thing that I needed to learn quickly was the importance of following up. Keep conversations flowing and don’t just assume you’re on the same page as a potential client. Send the email, make the call and connect with them to stay top of mind.
Have you had an role models or mentors along the way?
Yes and I am very lucky! I still keep in contact with my manager from my first London job and she’s incredible. She is they type of manager/person who wants to see women succeed and helps in whatever way possible. She’s definitely someone I consider my mentor and a person I aspire to be like. I’d highly suggest finding a mentor who you can relate to and who can help support your goals.
What’s been your greatest lesson you’ve learnt since starting your own business?
Learning from and leaning on your network can be vital to your business. I regularly interact with past co-workers, founder friends and founder networks (like this one!) to get feedback, advice and share experiences. It has proven to be invaluable.
What does success mean to you?
Success to me means doing it on my own terms. I loved being a part of marketing teams in my past roles but this new venture has allowed me to explore my own creativity and to focus some of my time of passion projects.
What books or podcasts would you recommend?
I absolutely love the podcast Inside Intercom. They have some excellent guests from companies like Slack, Microsoft and Reddit. They cover a variety of topics and share real insights into the way they’ve built successful startups.
I’d also recommend a book called Bossing Up by Samantha Kris which helps you to elevate your inner boss and make strategic decisions to get ahead.
What advice would you give anyone about to start a business?
Persistence is key! There will be highs and lows and running a business can be a bit of a roller coaster ride but it’s important to stay focused. I always try to live by the mantra “remember why you started”.
