Self discovery — the process of learning more about yourself — is a hot topic of the moment: it can help us improve our relationships, and live happier, more fulfilled lives. Self discovery plays into all areas of our lives: from business to sex. Knowing what we want (whether in the office or in the bedroom!) helps increase our confidence levels and allows us to lead more fulfilled lives — and who doesn’t want that?! The world of sexual wellness is having something of a long-awaited and exciting revolution. Female-founded startups like Dame, Maude and HANX are leading the charge, and there are more resources available than ever before, whether you want to increase your satisfaction or learn something new. Read on for Found & Flourish’s favourite resources for sexual wellness and self-discovery.
Let’s start with the most accessible: online resources.
One of the best places to deepen your understanding of this world is in fact the websites of sexual wellness brands, who often put a lot of time and effort into their blogs. We love HANX’s content, with articles ranging from cultural — like the MILF phenomenon and the orgasm gap — to the practical and scientific, like this one on the progesterone pill. Kama is another great starting point: the app provides “a simple daily practice designed by our in-house experts to recondition our mind, body, and heart to maximise pleasure and help everyone experience better orgasms.” Look for multidimensional resources that are fact-based. Kama, for example, works with a holistic approach that “combines scientific learnings around neuroplasticity with psychosexual therapy, somatic awareness, and ancient wisdom.” It helps that it’s beautifully branded, too.
Prefer to take it old-school with a book?
We love Mind the Gap by Dr Karen Gurney, and The Sweetness of Venus: A History of the Clitoris, by Sarah Chadwick.
If you’re really dedicated to working on your sexual wellness, you might want to consider working 1:1 with a specialist for a few sessions. You can visit erotic coaches and sex therapists on your own or with a partner, and sessions can help you get to the bottom of what you really want from your sex life. The NHS website provides more information about working with a sex therapist — make sure you take the time to find someone you feel comfortable talking to.
Found and Flourish member Ruth Ramsay is a sex educator and coach, so we asked her for her tips on sexual wellness resources. “I love to recommend podcasts as a great way to learn about sexual wellness and to become comfortable talking about sex,” she says. “When we hear others speaking openly and in a relaxed way, it makes us more able to do so too, whether that’s to a partner or a medical professional, or to our friends and our kids.” Get inspired by this list from the Good Trade, which shares sex podcast recommendations for self-discovery.
Ruth’s own recommendations? Her favourites include:
- Sexology Podcast with Dr Nazanin Moali
- Sex with Dr Jess with Dr Jessica O’Reilly
- Men, Sex & Pleasure with Cam Fraser
- Sex & Psychology with Dr Justin Lehmiller
Ruth’s best advice? “There are loads of podcasts out there, so listen to a few and see which you enjoy.”
