Your business finances 101 – my 5 top tips to get you started

Looking to get your finances organised but no idea where to start? Or maybe you are planning on having a baby and want to know what tax relief you are entitled to? We cover everything in this conversation from registering your business, organising up your finances, accounting software and how to find the right accountant for you and your business.

Caroline’s top five tips:

1. Get a separate bank account for your business – why this is important and some pros and cons of some of the available bank accounts.

2. Register your business – what you need to do as a sole trader and differences for a Limited Company.

3. Get some cloud accounting software – talk a bit about FreeAgent and why I love it for my clients but also mention the others (Xero, QB and Sage).

4. Find an accountant who is a good fit – Things to consider:

5. Plan ahead – Budgeting, cashflow, how much do you need to earn, how much time will you have available to you to work?

About your expert

Hi, I’m Caroline. Your friendly and supportive accountant helping new and established small businesses with integrity in a personal, approachable and professional way. I founded CBC in September 2018. We are an accountancy practice, but more than that, we look after our clients, champion and promote them as well as offering help and advice on all aspects of business. I studied accounting and finance at university from 2001 to 2005 and qualified with ACCA in 2008, all 1st time passes. I have worked in school finance, private practice and industry. My wealth of varied experience is what helps me to understand the needs of small business owners and being a small business owner myself, I am well connected to lots of professionals who can help you and your business too. A year in and I took on an admin assistant, 16 months in and a finance assistant joined the team. 2 years in and I found a fabulous freelance bookkeeper. I’m looking at outsourcing to a payroll professional in 2021 so that we can support even more small businesses. We all work flexibly from home and it works so well.
